Under Construction. More Coming Soon.
This is my collection of books by Robert E. Howard. This collection of books also includes works by Robert E. Howard
that were edited by other authors and also books that were simply based on charcters created by Robert E. Howard but written
by other authors. Also included are books about Robert E. Howard and books that include short stories by him. Not all of his
books are listed, just books that are currently in my own collection. Instead of listing the books in alphabetical order or
by year published, I have chosen to list them by publisher.
Lancer/Ace CONAN paperback editions, 1966-1977
The first comprehensive paperback editions, which compiled the existing Howard stories together with new non-Howard
stories in chronological order, to form a complete account of Conan's life. Lancer Books went out of business before bringing
out the entire 12 volume series, the final volume was completed by Ace (Prestige) Books. This version of the stories was the
one that introduced Conan into popular culture. Its covers featured dynamic images by Frank Frazetta, John Duillo and Boris
Vallejo. Ace reprinted the 12 Conan books from 1977 through the late 1980's with the correct reading order number
on the covers. Undertaken under the direction of De Camp and Carter, this edition includes all the original Howard material,
including that left unpublished in his lifetime and fragments and outlines. De Camp and Carter edited much of the material
and completed the stories that were not in finished form. New stories written entirely by themselves were added as well. Conan
The Buccaneer , Conan of the Isles and Conan of Aquilonia do not contain any material by Howard and were written by De Camp
and Carter. Conan the Avenger was mostly written by Björn Nyberg edited by De Camp with only a short piece
by Howard. While the Lancer editions has been criticized from a scholarly perspective for failing to present a pure
version of the Howard tales, untampered with by other hands, the interest of those who oversaw it was not so much purist as
practical; to popularize the corpus and ensure that it sold. That it has endured to become the subject of scholarly attention
is ample evidence of their success. If not for these books most readers would have never been introduced to Conan or for that
matter Robert E. Howard.
